ilumisys Grants Intellectual Property License to LED Lighting, Inc. for LED Fluorescent Tube Replacements

ilumisys, Inc. and parent company Altair Engineering continue commitment to providing LED products via licensed companies

TROY, Mich. – September 17, 2009 – ilumisys, Inc., developer and producer of next-generation solid-state lighting technology, announced today that it has granted a license for patents on its light-emitting diode (LED) fluorescent tube replacement to LED Lighting, Inc., of Northbrook, Ill.

“LED Lighting has had the privilege of being an ilumisys channel partner and participating in the development stages of ilumisys T-8 replacement lamps,” said Bill Hood, CEO and founder of LED Lighting, Inc. “This licensing agreement allows us to extend and strengthen our relationship with ilumisys, now giving us the ability to offer both premium and value-engineered products to our customers under the LED Lighting brand.”

The licensing agreement provides for royalty payments to be made on a per-unit basis in exchange for rights to manufacture and sell products covered by Altair’s patent portfolio.

“The additions to the ilumisys licensing partner program have resulted in positive feedback from our customers,” said Dave Simon, president of ilumisys, Inc. “Since the price and performance of LED fluorescent tube replacement products vary, our licensing program allows companies like LED Lighting to provide a range of products to the market. By giving licensees access to our expanding patent portfolio, we believe that both product development and installation rates will be accelerated.”

In addition to providing an energy-efficient alternative, LEDs are mercury free unlike the fluorescent tubes they replace. The 500 million to 600 million fluorescent tubes discarded annually in the United States introduce an estimated two to four tons of mercury to the environment, despite industry and government efforts to limit mercury content and encourage recycling.

ilumisys, formed in 2007, is a spinoff of Altair, a global software and technology company that has a growing presence in the energy market. With the backing of Altair, its majority owner, ilumisys has a deep and substantial investment in research and development that includes more than 30 patent applications filed to date.
